Located in Ryotsu Bay, the gateway to Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, this is the prefecture's largest lake. It has a circumference of 15 km, an area of 4.8 square km, and a maximum depth of 9 meters, slightly to the south of the lake. It is a relict lake with a sandbar blocking its front, and was once a semi-freshwater lake. In 1904 (Meiji 37), a dig was made in the center of the sandbar to create a shipping channel to Ryotsu Bay, and seawater began to flow into the lake, making it a saltwater lake today. Oyster farming is thriving on the lake's surface. The view of Mt. Kinpoku reflected in the evening calm is magnificent, and the area has been designated as part of the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. Modern hotels line the lakeshore, and Sado Airport is located on the western shore terrace.
