Roman Emperor. Reigned 244-249. Born in Arabia. Became commander of the Praetorian Guard during Gordian III's campaign against Persia, but had the emperor assassinated and ascended to the throne. Made peace with Persia, returned to Rome, and established good relations with the Senate. In 247 he won a great victory over the Carpi, and the following year celebrated the millennium of Rome's founding, but the Goths invaded Moesia and rebellions broke out in various places. He fought Decius, who had the support of the Danube army, near Verona, and was defeated and killed. [Masatoshi Ichikawa]
