A folk hero of African-Americans. A giant, powerful railroad worker who became a legend in West Virginia around 1870. He was a "man of the elements," and is said to have won a race to dig a hole for dynamite against a steam drill, but died "with a hammer in his hand." Many tall tales were written about his exploits, and he became something of a Paul Bunyan of the South. He has been the subject of several ballads.
