The name of a metal wind instrument used in ancient China for military signals. It can also be written as 喇叭, 喇吧, 喇, or 囉叭. The Chinese characters 喇 and 叭 are believed to mean "quick-talking" and "叭," respectively, meaning "wide-opening," but there are other examples of the instrument being written with various other characters. The name is said to come from Sanskrit, but there is no definite proof. There are two types of bronze instruments: the small bronze horn, which has an opening at the end of the instrument shaped like a morning glory flower, and the large bronze horn, which has a tulip-shaped opening. When the word 喇叭 is used in the narrow sense, it refers to the former. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
