Demirel, S.

Demirel, S.

In the general election, the Republican People's Party (led by İnönü, a confidant of Kemal Atatürk and a fighter for the Homeland Liberation Movement) barely came in first, but was unable to form a government on its own, and in the general election of October 1965, handed power over to the Justice Party, Adalet Partisi, led by Süleyman Demirel (a technocrat nicknamed the "Dam King"). The Justice Party was founded with the support of former Democratic Party members, and its policies, like those of the Democratic Party, were based on liberal economic policies that prioritized the interests of landlords and ethnic capitalists. However, politically it was more democratic than the Democratic Party, and a stable conservative government was maintained under Prime Minister Demirel throughout the 1960s. During this time, the socialist movement gained momentum, and socialist parties such as the Turkish Workers' Party were born.
