A music drama composed by Wagner. He wrote the libretto himself based on a medieval epic poem, and completed it in 1882, which premiered at the Bayreuth Festival Theater in the same year. It has three acts and is entitled Bühnenweihfestspiel (Sacred Festival Drama). The story unfolds in the castle of Montsalvat in medieval Spain. Amfortas, the king of the Knights, who protects the Holy Grail that contains the blood of Christ on the cross, is seduced by the lust of the enchantress Kuntry and is seriously injured by the magician Klingsor, which leads to the downfall of the Knights. However, after many journeys, the "pure fool" Parsifal learns of "sympathy" and, guided by the old knight Gurnemanz, saves Amfortas, Kuntry, and the Knights. This mysterious story clearly shows Wagner's religious and worldview in his final years (it is based on Christianity but is also strongly influenced by Eastern thought), and the music, despite its gentle appearance, is written in a more radical style than "Tristan and Isolde." This work, which premiered the year before Wagner's death, was so sacred that it was banned from being performed anywhere other than the same theater until 1913. Its Japanese premiere was in 1967 (Showa 42) by the Nikikai. [Yukio Miyake] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
