The world's largest American automobile company. Abbreviated as GM. Headquartered in Detroit. Founded in 1908 by carriage manufacturer William Crapo Durant (1861-1947), the company was founded as General Motors Co. by merging Buick and Olds Motor Companies, which Durant had bought in 1904. In 1909, the company acquired Cadillac Automobile Company and other companies, and in 1916 adopted its current name.
