Haribhadra (English spelling)

A scholar of the Jain White Robe School in India in the 8th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He is said to be a disciple of Jinabhadra (also called Jinabhaṭa). He was active in Western India and produced numerous works in many fields. He was the first person to write commentaries on the sacred texts in Sanskrit, and also contributed to the development of Indian narrative literature as the author of the famous religious narrative work Samaraitchakah, written in the vernacular Maharashtri.

Haribhadra

A late Indian Buddhist thinker around 800. Dates of birth and death unknown. He influenced later generations by writing two commentaries, the Large Commentary (The Magnificent Light of the Present Vision) and the Small Commentary, on the Sūtra of the Present Vision, which is said to have been written by Maitreya. The Sūtra of the Present Vision is a kind of outline for the Sūtra of the Eight Thousand Prajnaparamita Sutra, and is originally closely related to the Yogacara school, but Haribhadra commented on it from the Madhyamaka perspective. In Tibet, he is sometimes considered a disciple of Shantarakshita, especially because of his ideological similarities with him.

8世紀ころのインドのジャイナ教白衣（びやくえ）派の学匠。生没年不詳。ジナバドラJinabhadra(ジナバタJinabhaṭaなどともいう)の弟子とされる。西インドで活躍し，多方面にわたって数多くの著述を残した。彼は聖典に対してサンスクリットで注釈を書いた最初の人であると同時に，また俗語マーハーラーシュトリーで書かれた有名な宗教説話文学《サマラーイッチャカハー》の作者としてインドの物語文学の発達にも寄与した。

ハリバドラ【Haribhadra】

800年ころの後期インド仏教の思想家。生没年不詳。マイトレーヤ(弥勒)作とされる《現観荘厳論》に，《大注》(《現観荘厳光明》)と《小注》という2種の注釈を著したことにより，後世に影響を与えた。《現観荘厳論》は，《八千頌般若経》に対する一種の綱要書であり，本来唯識派との関連が深いが，ハリバドラはこれを中観派の立場から注釈した。とくにシャーンタラクシタとの思想的類似性のゆえに，チベットではその弟子と見なされることもある。
