[Born] 1255. Nicomedia [died] c.1305 Byzantine philologist. He made a great contribution to transmitting the works of classical antiquity to later generations. He edited and commented on the works of Hesiod, Thucydides, Aristophanes, Theocritus, Nonnus, Ptolemy, Diophantus, and others, covering literature, history, geography, and mathematics. He also translated works by Latin authors such as Cicero, Ovid, and Boethius into Greek, striving to bridge the intellectual gap with the West.
