Iomante

Japanese: イオマンテ
Iomante
A representative Ainu religious ritual. It is called the Bear Festival. A baby bear is raised for two winters, and in winter it is killed and worshiped on an altar, where the meat is eaten and singing and dancing are performed. Bears are considered a gift from God, bestowing fur and meat, and the ritual is a prayer for hunting, in which the bear's spirit is respectfully worshiped and sent back to the land of the gods. Similar bear festivals are also held by tribes in North America and northern Eurasia.
