A former town in Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture, consisting of small islands such as Goshoura Island, Makishima Island, and Yokoura Island in the Amakusa Islands. Also called "Goshonoura". Most of the islands are hilly, and the towns are engaged in purse net fishing, line fishing, pearl farming, and cultivation of citrus fruits such as sweet oranges. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the towns of Ariake, Kuratake, Sumomoto, Shinwa, Gowa, Amakusa, and Kawaura in Amakusa County to become a city. 20.14 km2 . 4,315 people (2003).
