A new crop introduced to Japan in 1970, whose leaves are used to extract a sweetener. It is also called simply stevia, after the genus name. A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to Paraguay, it has long been used as a sweetener by the Native Americans. The opposite leaves are 3-5 cm long, slightly pointed, elliptical, and tapered at the base. The stem grows to about 80 cm in height, and is slightly woody at the base. It branches, and in autumn, many small white flowers appear at the end of each branch, which continue to bloom one after another until early winter. The seeds are hairy and are dispersed by the wind. 1970年に日本に導入された葉から甘味料を採る新しい作物である。属名をとって単にステビアとも呼ばれる。パラグアイ原産のキク科の多年草で,古くからインディオたちが甘味料として利用していた。 対生する葉は長さ3~5cmのやや先のとがった楕円形で,基部が細る。茎は高さが80cmほどになり,基部は若干木化する。枝分れをして,各枝先に秋になると白い小花を多数つけ,初冬まで次々と咲き続ける。種子には毛があり,風に乗って散る。
