A town in the northeastern Negev region of southern Israel. Its name is taken from the biblical Arad, whose ruins are at Tel Arad, 9 km east-northeast. The town's name appears in a triumphal inscription of an Egyptian king from the 10th century BC. Modern Arad was settled in 1921, but failed due to lack of water. It is now supplied with water from a tributary of the Yarkon-Negev Pipeline, part of the national water supply plan, and is planned as a commuter town for workers of the Dead Sea Development State Company near Sedom. Construction began in 1962, but Arad's hinterland has promising resources, including mineral deposits from the Dead Sea, phosphate deposits at Zefa 16 km south, and natural gas fields at Rosh Tzohar, and the chemical and textile industries are important. Population 13,800 (1990 estimate). Arad |
