Church of the Nativity

Church of the Nativity
Founded in Bethlehem around 330 by Emperor Constantine the Great and his mother Helena, this is one of the oldest royal churches in the world. The current building was rebuilt by Emperor Justinian in the mid-6th century. Directly beneath the altar is the Holy Grotto of the Manger, where Jesus is believed to have been born. The fact that Jesus was born in a cave was originally recorded in the New Testament Apocrypha, the Protoevangelium of James (around 150), and was also quoted in the works of Justin and Origen. When the First Crusade established the Latin Empire, Baldwin I (reigned 1100-18) was enthroned in this church.
