A city in south-central Quebec, Canada. Located where the Saguenay River flows out of Lac Saint-Jean, the town spreads across both the Île de Alma and the Saguenay River. Originally an agricultural settlement, it grew with the development of electricity on Marine Island in 1923. The city's economy is supported by aluminum smelting, paper manufacturing, and granite quarrying. Founded by Saint-Joseph Dalmas in 1867, it became a village in 1917, a town in 1924, and a city in 1958. In 1962, it merged with the neighboring towns of Noudeville, Riverbend, and Marine Island.
