The fourth ruler of the Ottoman Empire (1389-1402). Nicknamed "Lightning." Son of Murad I. While serving in the Battle of Kosovo, he ascended to the throne when his father was assassinated. He made Serbia his vassal and managed the Balkans. He also annexed minor principalities in Asia Minor and fought against the Byzantine Empire. In 1396, he won a major victory over a Christian coalition led by Hungary, but in 1402, he was defeated in the Battle of Ankara when Timur invaded Asia Minor.
