Mathematician. Born in Tokushima City. After attending Tokushima Middle School and Kyoto's Third High School, he graduated from the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1897 (Meiji 30). After working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Kyoto Imperial University, a teacher at Matsuyama Middle School, and a lecturer at Tokyo Higher Normal School, he became a professor at the Department of Mathematics at Tohoku Imperial University in April 1911 (Meiji 44), and made a great contribution to solidifying the foundations of Tohoku University when it was first founded. He is known for his great stimulation of the mathematical world with the publication of Japan's first academic journal dedicated to mathematics (Tohoku Mathematical Journal), and for his research into Japanese mathematics, including the discovery that Seki Takakazu's "The Method of Solving Problems" included the theory of determinants. He also contributed greatly to mathematics education and enlightenment by publishing enlightening books on advanced mathematics such as probability theory, introduction to series, and projective geometry as part of the Mathematics Series published by Okura Shoten, by authoring algebra textbooks and geometry textbooks for secondary education (both published by Tokyo Kaiseikan) which were all the rage throughout the country from the end of the Meiji period to around 1935, and by serving as the first president of the Japan Society for Mathematical Education for Secondary Education (1919-1927).
