Antoine de La Salle

A French storyteller from the late Middle Ages, circa 1388-1461. Born near Arles at the end of the 14th century as the son of a famous mercenary captain who was active in Italy and elsewhere. He served the Count of Anjou as a page from an early age, and spent most of his life at court. During that time he traveled throughout Europe, participating in wars and tournaments, and his experiences inspired his works such as "The Tournaments and Art of War of the Old Days" (1459). Earlier, he wrote such books as "The Helmet" (1437) and "The Hall" (1451) for the education of the children of the Count of Anjou.

フランス中世末期の物語作者。14世紀末にイタリアなどで活躍した有名な傭兵隊長の子としてアルル近くに生まれる。早くからアンジュー伯家に小姓として仕え，生涯の大半をその宮廷で過ごす。その間ヨーロッパ各地を旅し，戦争や騎馬試合に参加，その時の体験から《昔日の騎馬試合と兵法要綱》(1459)その他の著作が生まれる。それよりさきアンジュー伯家の子弟教育のために道徳書《兜》(1437)，《広間》(1451)などを著す。
