It began with Gon Chunagon Tamesuke, the son of posthumous Grand Minister Fujiwara Yoshikado and great-grandson of posthumous Grand Minister Takato. Tamesuke was the first to use the name Kanro-ji, but his descendants used the names Kanro-ji, Yoshida, or Bojo. However, when Fujinaga was appointed Gon Chunagon during the Nanboku-cho period, his fellow disciple Yoshida Kunitoshi was also promoted from Councillor to Gon Chunagon, so Fujinaga took the name Kanro-ji, and this has been the family name for generations.
