...This refers to all the tools used to split, burn, listen to, and record incense wood. Most of the incense tools were established by the early Edo period, with the Oie and Yonekawa schools often using gorgeous maki-e and pear-grain items, while the Shino school often uses mulberry wood. There are almost no differences in the tools between schools. There are also some differences in size, but they are generally the same. The tools shown here are from Maki Bunryu's "Shizugaya no Ume" (Plum of the Incense Master) published in 1748 (Kan'en 1) (illustration).
