Omukō - Omukō

A theater term. The seats on the top floor, and the audience in those seats. In old theaters, the "O-Ryuuken" was located at the back of the second floor, and in modern times, it corresponds to the third floor seats or standing room only seats. Because these are popular seats, the expression "counting on the O-Mukou" (to aim for the public's approval) has become commonplace, but on the other hand, since there are many skilled theater-goers in these seats, they are also respected in a certain sense, and in that sense they are similar to the French Paradise and the German Olympus, and in Japan they are sometimes called Sajiki (gallery).

劇場用語。最上階にある客席、またその席の観客。昔の劇場で2階の後方にあった「大入場」、現代では3階席や立見席がこれにあたる。大衆席であるため、俗受けをねらうことを「大向うを当て込む」というふうに日常語化しているが、反面、この席には芝居好きの見巧者(みごうしゃ)が多いので一種の尊敬も払われ、その意味ではフランスのパラディparadisやドイツのオリンプスOlympsに通じ、日本でも天井桟敷(さじき)とよぶことがある。
