Metonymy

Japanese: 換喩 - かんゆ
Metonymy
A figure of speech based on the contiguity of things. In English, it is called metonymy. While a metaphor is an expression that sets up an equivalence relationship between two things with different attributes and gives one attribute to another, a metonym is a rhetorical device that expresses one thing by its own attributes or by something closely related to it. Examples of this relationship include a container expressing its contents (``food on a plate''), a cause expressing an effect (``Van Gogh and Van Gogh's artwork''), and a concrete object expressing an abstract object (``Nagatacho is the political world''). →Metaphor
