Period - Ki (English spelling)

One of the time periods used to divide geological time. It is a unit below the era, and the era is further divided into eras. The era is defined as the period during which a system, which is a time stratigraphic unit, was formed. For example, the period during which strata called the Neogene system were deposited is the Neogene. The Neogene is divided into the Miocene and Pliocene. The approximately 541 million years since the Paleozoic Era are divided into the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian (all of the Paleozoic Era), Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous (all of the Mesozoic Era), Paleogene, Neogene, and Quaternary (all of the Cenozoic Era).

地質時代を区分するときの時代単位の一つ。代の下の単位で、紀はさらに世に分けられる。紀は時間層序区分単位である系の形成された期間として定義される。たとえば、新第三系とよばれる地層の堆積(たいせき)した期間が新第三紀である。新第三紀は中新世、鮮新世に分けられる。古生代以後の約5億4100万年は、古いほうからカンブリア紀、オルドビス紀、シルル紀、デボン紀、石炭紀、ペルム紀（二畳紀）（以上古生代）、三畳紀、ジュラ紀、白亜紀（以上中生代）、古第三紀、新第三紀、第四紀（以上新生代）に区分されている。
