The Minangkabau people's anti-Dutch conflict (1803-37) in southwestern Sumatra started as a conflict between Islamic reformists and traditional rulers based on customary law, but after 1833 the Dutch sided with the latter, leading to fierce resistance from the local people. The Dutch besieged the Bonjor district, the center of the conflict, for two years, eventually forcing it to surrender and expelling the Islamic leader Imam Bonjor, bringing the war to an end.
