Yoshiu Otomo

...One of the famous families of medieval Kyushu. It began with Yoshinao, the adopted son of Nakahara Chikayoshi, who was from a middle-ranking aristocracy in Kyoto and served Minamoto no Yoritomo, and was involved in the control of Kyushu. Yoshinao was one of Yoritomo's close samurai and based in Otomo-go, Sagami Province, from which the surname Otomo originated. It is highly likely that Yoshinao was appointed as the guardian of Bungo Province from Yoshinao's time, and this position was hereditary throughout the Middle Ages. It was during the third generation, Yoritsune (Yasunao), that they went down to Kyushu, and Yoritsune was also appointed as the magistrate of the Chinzei Dangisho and was one of the leaders when the Mongols were intercepted at Hakata. There is a theory that during Yoritsune's time, he governed Kyushu as the Chinzei magistrate together with the Muto clan, but this has not been confirmed at present. ...

…中世九州の名族の一つ。京都の中級貴族出身で源頼朝につかえ，九州支配にも関与した中原親能の猶子能直にはじまる。能直は頼朝の側近の武士の一人で相模国大友郷を本拠とし，大友の苗字はそこからはじまる。能直のときから豊後守護に任じた可能性が強く，以後中世を通じてこの地位を世襲した。九州へ下向したのは3代頼泰(泰直)のときで，頼泰は鎮西談議所の奉行にも任じ，蒙古を博多に迎撃したときの指揮者の一人でもあった。なお頼泰のとき，鎮西奉行として武藤氏とともに九州を統轄したという説があるが，今のところ確定的ではない。…
