…The 25 volumes of the “Sicilian Folklore Series” (1871-1913) were the result of this. In 1880, he founded the journal “Folklore Studies” together with fellow doctor and folklorist Salomone Marino (1847-1916), and built the foundations of Italian folklore research with this journal until 1909. In 1911, he opened a folklore course at the University of Palermo, where he became the first professor. Pitre’s research attitude is often criticized for being solely focused on collecting materials, but it is significant that he brought to the surface of history for the first time the image of the southern Italian people, which had been lost in the literary trend of late romanticism. …
