[Born] 116th century Sabiny, Learte [Died] 27 years ago Roman encyclopedist. Friend of Cicero. Student of Antiochus of Ascalon. Produced 600 volumes of writings. As a poet, he wrote the Menippus Satura, dedicated to the Cynic Menippus of Gadara, but as a scholar he was highly influential, and only De lingua latina (c. 45 BC) and Rerum rusticarum (On Agriculture) survive, but he also contributed to all other fields. His philosophical theme was what is the highest good for humans, but his significance is more in providing material for them, and many writers sought him for material, and Augustine in particular borrowed many facts about Roman religion from him. Virgil also owed a debt to De Ruralis when he wrote his Agricultural Songs. He was originally a Pompey supporter, but was ordered by Caesar to establish the first public library in Rome. After Caesar's death, he was banished by Antony but later pardoned. He was an advisor to Augustus on religious matters.
