...The Muromachi period "Thirty-two Artisans' Poetry Contest" depicts a Rehmannia glutinosa seller wearing a hat and carrying a small pail on the end of a pole. Its origins are thought to lie in the medicine department of the Bureau of Medicine, which, under the Ritsuryo system, sent herbal medicines from various provinces and provided them to the Emperor, various officials, and various ministers. The formation of the Rehmannia glutinosa seller was particularly closely related to the imperial court event known as "Kyoyaku." This involves the Emperor drinking the medicines Toso and Byakusan, presented by the Bureau of Medicine, steeped in sake at the beginning of the year to celebrate longevity, and the main ingredient in Toso and Byakusan was Rehmannia glutinosa. ...
