...The Muromachi period "Thirty-two Artisans' Poetry Contest" depicts a Rehmannia glutinosa seller wearing a hat and carrying a small pail on the end of a pole. Its origins are thought to lie in the medicine department of the Bureau of Medicine, which, under the Ritsuryo system, sent herbal medicines from various provinces and provided them to the Emperor, various officials, and various ministers. The formation of the Rehmannia glutinosa seller was particularly closely related to the imperial court event known as "Kyoyaku." This involves the Emperor drinking the medicines Toso and Byakusan, presented by the Bureau of Medicine, steeped in sake at the beginning of the year to celebrate longevity, and the main ingredient in Toso and Byakusan was Rehmannia glutinosa. ...

…室町時代の《三十二番職人歌合》には，番匠笠をかぶり小さな桶を棒先につるして担いだ地黄煎売の姿が描かれている。その源流は，令制下，諸国から草薬を納め，天皇をはじめ諸司，諸臣に諸薬を調進した典薬寮の薬戸にあったと考えられるが，とくに地黄煎供御人の形成には，〈供御薬〉という宮中行事が深くかかわっていた。これは，天皇が典薬寮より献上の屠蘇（とそ），白散（びやくさん）という薬を年の初めに酒にひたして飲んで長寿を祝うというものであるが，その屠蘇，白散の主薬材が地黄であった。…
