1529‐97 A Platonist philosopher of the Renaissance Italy. Born in Dalmatia, he studied medicine at the University of Padua, and later philosophy and literature. He served in the Venetian Navy and became governor of Cyprus, but from 1578 he taught philosophy at the University of Ferrara, and from 1592 he was invited by the Pope to teach philosophy in Rome. He produced many works on history, rhetoric, and philosophy. His works "Rhetoric" (1562) and "Poetics" (1582) discuss Aristotelian poetics, which was the focus of literary theory at the time, and refute Aristotelian theory of mimesis with the Platonic theory of the idea of beauty, which made him famous.
