Balázs Béla

Hungarian writer, poet, and film aesthetician. Born in Szeged, he studied in Budapest, Berlin, Paris, and other places, and after returning to Hungary, he entered the literary world as a playwright and poet. Works from this period include the libretto for Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle (1911). He was a member of the New Art Movement group, and met Lukacs, with whom he joined the Hungarian Communist government just after World War I. He then went into exile and traveled around Austria, Germany, and the Soviet Union, but became famous as a film aesthetician with his work Visual Man (1924) published during his exile, and thereafter worked as a producer and scriptwriter in the film industry of various countries. After World War II, he returned to Hungary and wrote the script for Somewhere in Europe, and occupied a leading position in the film industry. He is also widely known as a fairy tale writer, with excellent works such as Seven Fairy Tales (1918) and The True Color of the Sky (1925). In addition, the Diary (1903-1922), published in 1982, is also a valuable cultural historical record.
