An approximation method for dealing with many-particle systems in quantum mechanics. The wave function ψ(1, 2, ..., N ) of an N -particle system is approximated by the product of one-body wave functions, such as ψ(1)ψ(2)...ψ( N ). This method does not satisfy the Pauli principle for the wave function of the entire system, so it is not a good approximation for systems of fermions such as electrons, and the Hartree–Fock approximation must be used.
