Kouros (English spelling)

Japanese: クーロス(英語表記)kouros
Kouros (English spelling)
A Greek word meaning "youth." It refers to the upright statues of nude young men in Greek sculpture from the late 7th century BC to the early 5th century BC. Some were votive statues of deities in sacred areas, but most were funerary statues of the dead erected on tombs. The statue stands upright, facing forward, with the left foot slightly forward, both arms hanging straight at the sides, and both hands pressed tightly against the thighs. Over 200 statues, including fragments, are known, but the main examples are the "Youth from Sounion" (c. 600 BC, National Archaeological Museum, Athens), "Apollo of Tenea" (actually a tomb statue of a young man, c. 550 BC, Glyptothek, Munich), "Tomb of Croesus" (c. 530-520 BC, National Archaeological Museum, Athens), and "Boy of Kritias" (c. 480 BC, Acropolis Museum).
