The title of a member of the imperial family who became a monk. Also called "hoshinnou." In the Heian period, many members of the imperial family became monks. Hoshinno is a prince who becomes a monk and then receives the title of prince, while the opposite is called Nyudo Shinno, but there are also cases where the same person is called Hoshinno and Nyudo Shinno.
