A strait at the western edge of the Mediterranean Sea, between the European and African continents, which is of great military importance. It is the exit point from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, and the two headlands at its eastern entrance (Fersen in Gibraltar and Jabal Musa in Ceuta) were called the Pillars of Hercules in Greek times. It is 15 km at its narrowest point, and 942 m deepest off the coast of Ceuta. Historically, it was the route used by Islamic forces to invade the Iberian Peninsula, and today the British naval base is located on the north coast, and the Spanish military port of Ceuta is located on the south coast.
