A military commander during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Iekuni. Sakyodayu and Shuridayu. Dosei was his posthumous name. He served the Ashikaga clan during the civil wars. During the Kanno Disturbance (1349-52), he initially sided with Ashikaga Tadayoshi, but later joined Takauji's side at the urging of Hosokawa Akiuji. In 1353 (Shohei 8, Bunwa 2), he became the steward of Kamakura kubo Ashikaga Motouji. In 1358 (Shohei 13, Enbun 3), he murdered Nitta Yoshioki at Watashi in Musashi Yaguchi (Ota Ward, Tokyo). The following year, at the request of Ashikaga Yoshiakira, he led a large army from the eastern provinces to Kyoto to fight against the southern forces of Kusunoki Masanori. However, he started an internal dispute with Niki Yoshinaga and others, which resulted in a counterattack by the southern forces. In 1660, he left Kyoto and returned to Kamakura, but the generals of the eastern provinces were increasingly dissatisfied with Kunikiyo's arbitrary decisions, such as the large-scale military mobilization he implemented when he went to Kyoto, and the following year, he was dismissed from his position as steward by Motouji and banished from Kamakura. He resisted Motouji at the castles of Mito, Kanayama, and Shuzenji in Izu, but was outnumbered and surrendered in 1662 (17th year of the Shohei era, 1st year of the Jōji era). With the help of the Jishu sect, he escaped to Kyoto, but later died in poverty in Yamato.
