Dress shirt - WAISHATSU

Japanese:
Dress shirt - WAISHATSU

A shirt worn under a suit. It is worn with a necktie. It is said to be a Japanese corruption of the English word "white-shirt." White shirts began to be worn in Japan toward the end of the Meiji period, but the term "yai-sha" became established toward the beginning of the Taisho period. Furthermore, in the early Showa period, it went beyond its original meaning and came to be used as a shirt worn under a suit. Therefore, shirts of colors and patterns other than white are also called yai-sha. They are characterized by a high-necked collar, a buttoned front, and cuffs. They have long sleeves, but recently short sleeves have also been made for summer wear. They are made of so-called shirting fabrics (shating) such as broadcloth, oxford, batiste, poplin, and chambray, made from cotton, linen, silk, wool, or polyester.

There are various styles of collars and cuffs depending on the fashion and the type of dress shirt, but formal dress shirts are characterized by removable collars and cuffs that are glued on. For everyday use, there are single and double cuffs. Collars include the standard regular style, button-down collars that fasten with buttons at the collar end, pinhole collars that fasten with a pin, and tab collars with tabs, and collar points can be long, short, or rounded. The size of a dress shirt is determined by the collar circumference and sleeve length.
