A word game in which the letters of a word are rearranged to create a new word with a different meaning. For example, orange is transformed into organe. It has been known since ancient Greece and Rome, and was popular in medieval Europe, especially France. In linguistics, it refers to the phenomenon of the association and proliferation of sounds scattered within the text of a literary work. It was discovered by Saussure, and continued to be developed by J. Lacan, J. Kristeva, and others. The sounds that lie "behind the words" in a sentence weave deep consciousness and weave semantic experiences that transcend individuals and generations into texts (spoken and written). This has come to be used to analyze "textual interrelationships" in modern literature and thought.
