Shigetada Hatakeyama

Japanese:
Shigetada Hatakeyama

A military commander in the early Kamakura period. Son of Shigeyoshi. His mother was the daughter of Miura Yoshiaki. According to a family tree, he descended from the Kanmu Taira clan, and took the name Hatakeyama from Shigeyoshi, who was the head priest of the Hatakeyama Manor in Musashi Province (near the Kawamoto area of Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture). In the Battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180 (Jisho 4), he initially opposed Yoritomo, but eventually submitted to him and distinguished himself in the pursuit of Kiso Yoshinaka and the Taira clan, and in the conquest of Oshu in 1189 (Bunji 5). During this time, in connection with an incident that occurred at Isenumatamamikuriya (Matsusaka city, Mie prefecture) in which the local lord Shigetada was arrested in connection with the obstruction of the local lord's deputy, Shigetada was suspected of treason due to slanderous accusations by Kajiwara Kagetoki. However, Shigetada claimed that he had no ulterior motives towards Yoritomo, and that since a samurai always spoke his mind, there was no need to write a pledge or anything like that, and thus Yoritomo trusted him. This is a famous story. He served Yoritomo in the vanguard during his second visits to Kyoto in 1190 and 1195 (Kenkyu 1 and 6), but in 1205 (Genkyu 2), his son Shigeyasu (whose mother was the daughter of Adachi Tomoto) was killed by Tokimasa in a battle with Hiraga Tomomasa, the son-in-law of Hojo Tokimasa's second wife, Maki clan, and on June 22nd, Shigetada also died in battle against the Hojo army at Musashi Futamatagawa (Hodogaya Ward, Yokohama City). After his death, his wife (the daughter of Hojo Tokimasa) remarried Ashikaga Yoshizumi, and their son Yasukuni inherited the Hatakeyama family name. Shigetada was known for his great strength, but he was also blessed with musical talent and is said to have had a profound character.
