…In 1167, the city joined the Lombard League against Emperor Frederick I, but like other Italian cities of the time, the nobles, divided into those who supported the Pope and those who supported the emperor, fought for control. In 1267, the Este family established themselves as Signores, and the city prospered under them. In particular, Ercole I (reigned 1471-97), along with his father Borso, became famous throughout Europe as a patron of the Renaissance culture of the time. Poets such as Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso frequented his court, and a unique style of painting, known as the Ferrara School, emerged. Ercole I also planned and developed the city into the one we see today, surrounded by walls, with grid-like streets and abundant greenery. …
