Japanese: 生田万 - いくたよろず
Ikuta Man - Ikuta Yorozu

A Japanese classicist of the late Edo period. The eldest son of Nobukatsu, a samurai of the Tatebayashi domain in Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture). His childhood name was Ryo or Yu, and as he grew up he was called Kozen, Tamon, and Man. His given name was Kunihide, and his pen name was Kyūkyō. In 1824 (Bunsei 7), he became a pupil of Hirata Atsutane in Edo, and quickly distinguished himself. In 1828, he submitted a proposal for reform of the domain's government, "Moss on a Rock," to the Tatebayashi domain, and was banished. After that, he taught his pupils as the head of his teacher's school, Ibuki-no-ya. In 1831 (Tenpo 2), he was pardoned by the domain, but was unable to return to the domain, and opened the Kōsai-kan in Ota, Kozuke Province, where he taught his pupils. In 1836, Higuchi Eitetsu of Kashiwazaki, Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture), who had studied under Kebukishamon, and others invited Man to move there with his wife and children. It happened to be during the Tenpo famine, and when news of the Oshio Heihachiro Rebellion reached Man, he was deeply influenced and on June 1, 1837, he and six of his comrades attacked the Kashiwazaki Jin'ya in the Kuwana domain, but after being defeated, he committed suicide. He was 37 years old. He has written many books, including "Daichu Dojin Manko", "Daigaku Kaitei Gaihen", "Nihonbunden Hyoron", and "Kogaku Nisenbun". He also has the "Ikuta Manzenshu".
