Witch trials refer to prosecutions against witches and sorcerers. They began to take hold in earnest after the 13th century, when the Christian world was shaken by the problem of heresy. The classic book on witches, Hammer of Witches, by Sprenger and Kramer, was published in 1486. Joan of Arc was also burned at the stake as a witch. It should be noted that during the Reformation, witch hunts were more rampant in Protestant countries than in Catholic countries. They are a typical example of mass hysteria that emerges as a result of social change, and although the targets are different, it is believed that a similar mentality still continues to this day. → Witch Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
