A city in southeastern Sweden, 160 km southwest of Stockholm. Population 131,000 (1996). Capital of Östergötland County. An industrial center, with thriving industries including steel, railways, sugar refining, beer brewing, textiles, hosiery, hosiery, tobacco, and wood processing. A bishopric was established in the 12th century, and it was a major commercial city in the Middle Ages, but it declined for some time after a fire in 1700. However, it was revived after the Gota Canal was completed in 1832. The city is beautiful, and in the center there are fountains and statues by C. Milles (1875-1955), a representative Swedish sculptor. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
