Bill of lading - Funani Shoken

In the case of the transportation of goods by sea, this refers to the negotiable instrument that represents the right to claim delivery of the goods. Usually, it is called B/L (Bill of Lading).

There are various types of bills of lading; for example, one issued before loading is called a received bill of lading, and one issued after loading is called a shipped bill of lading. Also, a bill of lading that lists some abnormality in the goods being transported is called a defective bill of lading, and one without such a listing is called a clean bill of lading. There are also bills of lading called through bills of lading, which are used for different types of transportation, such as land transportation and sea transportation, or transportation by multiple carriers. The container B/L used for transportation by container is one such example. The bill of lading is one of the shipping documents, along with the waybill and marine insurance policy, and is a document required for documentary transactions.

海上物品運送において、その物品の引渡請求権を表章している有価証券をいう。通常、B／L(ビー・エル)（Bill of Lading）といわれる。

　種々の態様があり、たとえば、その発行時期が船積み前のものを受取船荷証券といい、船積み後のものを船積船荷証券という。また、運送されている物品について、なんらかの異常が記載されているものを故障付船荷証券、そのような記載のないものを無故障船荷証券という。このほか、陸上運送と海上運送というように、異種類の運送手段や、複数の運送人による運送などにおいて利用される通し船荷証券などといわれているものもある。コンテナによる運送などにおいてのコンテナB／Lなどは、その一つである。船荷証券は、送り状、海上保険証券などとともに船積書類の一つであり、荷為替(にかわせ)取組に必要とされる書類である。
