It has an altar for worship, seats for the congregation, and facilities for baptism. ※Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun - March 29, 1887 (Meiji 20) "The church built by Mr. Nikolai in Surugadai" [2] Yushima Seido. A shrine dedicated to Confucius and other sages in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. The Confucius Temple was built by Tokugawa Yoshinao, the lord of Owari Domain, at Shinobuoka, Ueno, where Hayashi Razan's school was located, and was moved to Shoheizaka in Yushima by Shogun Tsunayoshi in 1690. [1] 〘名〙① 孔子をまつった建築物。聖廟(せいびょう)。文廟。※俳諧・五元集(1747)元「聖堂にこまぬく蝶の袂哉」② キリスト教の教会堂。礼拝のための祭壇、会衆の席、洗礼のための施設などをもつ。※東京日日新聞‐明治二〇年(1887)三月二九日「駿河台なるニコライ氏の聖堂建築は」[2] 湯島聖堂のこと。東京都文京区湯島にある孔子その他の聖賢をまつった廟。林羅山の学問所のあった上野忍岡に尾張藩主徳川義直が建てた孔子廟先聖殿を、元祿三年(一六九〇)将軍綱吉が湯島昌平坂に移したもの。数度炎上し、現在のものは昭和一〇年(一九三五)に復興したもの。→昌平坂学問所。※雑俳・柳多留‐一三(1778)「どふ思ったか聖堂でじゅすを出し」
