The capital of Nariño province in the southwestern tip of Colombia. It is located on a plateau at the eastern foot of the Galeras Volcano (4,267m) in the Andes near the border with Ecuador, at an altitude of about 2,600m. This old town was founded in 1539 and developed as an important trading center during the Spanish colonial period. During the War of Independence, it became a base for Spanish royalists and resisted the independence movement to the end. Today, it is a commercial and industrial center for the surrounding agricultural and livestock areas, distributing agricultural and livestock products and manufacturing food, soap, bricks, furniture, Panama hats, etc. It is also known for producing painted wooden bowls finished with a unique varnish called pastonis. It is the home of Nariño University (1964). The Pan-American Highway passes through the city, 122km from the Ecuadorian border. It is a junction of roads that run east across the Andes. It is also connected by road to the port of Tumaco on the Pacific coast. Population: 204,475 (1985).
