Korean folk song. It was originally a name added to the end of the name of a song in the early Goryeo and Yi dynasties, as opposed to Seongak and Gagaku, but it has since become the name of a genre. "Kyoku" means "song" (nore). "Byeolgyoku" refers to Korean folk music or local music, different from Chinese music fu (gafu) and gakujo, and means a song created separately. The representative work of yeolgyoku is "Hallymbyeokgok," which was created during the reign of Emperor Gojong (1214-59) of Goryeo and had a great influence on the world of poetry. It was written by Confucian scholars at the Hanlimyuan (the government office in charge of writing poems) under the military government of the time, and is divided into eight verses that describe aspects of life at the Hanlimyuan, expressing their hedonistic yet elegant feelings about life.
