American novelist. After working for newspapers and magazines in his native Pennsylvania and New York, he began writing short stories and gained recognition for his novel, "Samara Town" (1934), a harsh portrayal of the lifestyles of dissolute country club patrons. His subsequent works were mostly hard-boiled novels of manners, realistically depicting the lives of country club and bar patrons, actors, and others. His works include "Butterfield Eight" (1935), based on an urban murder case; "Heaven's Hope" (1938), a tragic love story between a screenwriter and a bookseller; "The Passion of Living" (1949), about a woman who betrays her beloved husband; and collections of short stories, plays, and essays.
