Joruri Gidayu-bushi. Historical piece. 13 acts. Collaborative work by Chikamatsu Yanagi, Chikamatsu Kosuiken, and Chikamatsu Senyoken. First performed in July 1799 (Kansei 11) at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka. Commonly known as "Taikoki." Based on Okada Gyokuzan's reading book "Ehon Taikoki," the play tells the story of Akechi Mitsuhide from his rebellion to his final moments in Ogurusu village, with one act (volume) per day from June 1st to 13th. In order to avoid violating the laws of the time, the characters' names were changed to Takechi for Akechi, Harunaga for Oda Nobunaga, and Hisayoshi for Hashiba Hideyoshi. The year after the premiere, it was adapted into a kabuki play. The most famous is the "Amagasaki" act on June 10th, which vividly depicts the sorrow of rebels and the cruelty of war that tears apart the pure love between a young man and woman, and is widely known as "Taiju" (short for "Taikoki 10th Act"). Satsuki, the mother of Takechi Mitsuhide, is ashamed of her son's rebellion and lives in seclusion in Amagasaki. Mitsuhide's wife Misao, his son Jujiro, and his fiancee Hatsugiku come to visit. Jujiro, who is prepared to die in battle in order to obey his father, says goodbye, but Satsuki, understanding his feelings, allows him to marry Hatsugiku before setting out on the front lines. Tonight, a traveling monk comes to the house to stay overnight, disguised as Hisayoshi. Mitsuhide follows him and, trying to kill Hisayoshi, accidentally stabs Satsuki with a bamboo spear. Jujiro, seriously injured, returns and tells him about the defeat, and dies while worrying about his father's safety. Even Mitsuhide, as expected, is overcome by his feelings of gratitude and love and cries. At that moment, Hisayoshi appears and promises to fight Mitsuhide at Yamazaki before parting ways. The chapters covering June 1st to 5th depict Mitsuhide's assassination at Honno-ji Temple after being insulted by Harunaga, and the story of Tamatsuyu, the younger sister of Shimizu Muneharu, the lord of Takamatsu Castle, and her lover Urabeyama Saburo. The chapters then cover Mitsuhide's turmoil at Myoshin-ji Temple (the sixth chapter) and the sacrifice of Suzuki Shigenari's descendant Magoichi to save the orphaned children of the Ashikaga clan.
