Acid-base balance

A term used to describe the state of regulation of hydrogen ion concentration (pH) in blood and body fluids. In the 1920s, American biochemist Van Slyke and others used this term to describe the relationship between the amount of buffer base and the corresponding cation in body fluids. Currently, parameters such as pH, bicarbonate ion (HCO ₃ ^- ), buffer base (BB), and Base Excess (BE), which is the deviation from the normal value, are used to indicate the state of acid-base balance.

血液、体液の水素イオン濃度（pH）の調節状態を表す用語。1920年代にアメリカの生化学者であるワンスライクVan Slykeらが、体液中の緩衝塩基とそれに対応する陽イオンの量との関係を示すのにこのことばを用いた。現在では、pH、炭酸水素イオン（HCO₃^-）、緩衝塩基Buffer Base（BB）、およびその正常値からの偏位量であるBase Excess（BE）などのパラメーターが酸塩基平衡の状態を示すのに用いられている。
