A term used to describe the state of regulation of hydrogen ion concentration (pH) in blood and body fluids. In the 1920s, American biochemist Van Slyke and others used this term to describe the relationship between the amount of buffer base and the corresponding cation in body fluids. Currently, parameters such as pH, bicarbonate ion (HCO 3 - ), buffer base (BB), and Base Excess (BE), which is the deviation from the normal value, are used to indicate the state of acid-base balance.
