A small, long-tailed field mouse (illustration) endemic to Japan that lives in the forests of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. A mammal of the Muridae family in the Rodentia order. It resembles the Japanese field mouse, but has a slim, slender body, small front and back legs, and a beautiful chestnut color on the back and white underside. It is 7.5-10 cm long, 7.5-11 cm long, and weighs around 15 g. It prefers to live in the dark forests of the dense forest floor, from the plains to the high mountains, and has a fairly large population of 20-30 individuals per hectare. 北海道,本州,四国,九州の森林にすむ日本固有の尾の長い小型のノネズミ(イラスト)。齧歯(げつし)目ネズミ科の哺乳類。アカネズミに似るが,体は細くスマートで,前足,後足ともに小さく,体色は背面が美しい栗色,腹面は白色。体長7.5~10cm,尾長7.5~11cm,体重は15g前後。平地から高山まで,うっそうと茂る林床の暗い森に好んですみ,個体数は1ヘクタール当り20~30頭とかなり多い。高山帯のハイマツ林にもすむ。
